Seniors Find Enjoyment in the Active Northern Nevada Lifestyle

While Florida and Arizona are the top places that typically come to mind after retiring, you might be surprised to learn there is a new city on the list for people over 55….. Reno Nevada. The “Biggest Little City In The World” has much to offer everyone, but there are many aspects of Reno a place people over 55 want to call home.

Many associate Reno with gambling, but those who already live in Reno or the neighboring city of Sparks know there is a variety of year-round recreational activities suited perfectly for the active lifestyle enjoyed by most folks over 55 years of age.  In the summer months, residents in Sparks enjoy spending days at the beach and on the water at the Sparks Reservoir. Sparks Marina is truly unique, offering boating, swimming, scuba diving, fishing, and breathtaking views of the nearby mountains.  Additional activities include biking on the numerous bike paths, golfing on one of the many public golf courses, and even horseback riding. In neighboring Reno, there is also a variety of water activities at Pyramid Lake or the country’s largest alpine lake, Lake Tahoe.

When winter comes, downhill and cross-country skiing are the sports of choice at nearby Mt. Rose and the several world-famous ski resorts at Lake Tahoe. Other snow-related sports such as snowmobiling or snowshoeing also are favorites among Reno and Sparks residents.

In addition to the active lifestyle, Nevada seniors also enjoy the lack of income taxes!  While vehicle taxes can be high compared to other states, the fact that Nevada has no income tax (either personal or corporate) makes the cost of living much more affordable.

Lastly, many people enjoy the mild climate Reno offers. While Nevada means “snow-covered”, Reno only sees an average of 10 inches of rainfall per year. There is an average of 252 days of sunshine every year.  The sun produces serotonin (one of the hormones that make you feel happy) along with a healthy dose of Vitamin D which helps keep your bones stronger.

If you are looking to live an active lifestyle close to a wide variety of year-round outdoor recreational activities, consider an easy maintenance home in Sparks at one of Silverado Homes’ new communities at Sky Ridge, Silver Sage, or Silver Canyon.
